RE: Hood vent do you have one?

Our "cheapie," "entry-level" 2003 Dutchmen Classic vents directly through the side of the trailer through a louvered grate. It's a Ventline hood exhaust, with a light that alluminates the stovetop, and sucks everything outside, even my noxious cigarette smoke, much to Other Half's relief. It's a nosiy sucker, but it works extremely well. Cheers,

Beware Maine's Route 2

For those of you who might be considering Route 2 as a connector route across Maine from US 91 to I-95, I would suggest you reconsider. It is bad road that gets worse and in spots, disappears entirely in a very long construction zone. We were convinced our cabinets would fall off the walls and our truck dashboard would hit our knees. Yes, we slowed to a crawl and it was still bone-jarring. Yesterday, it took us 7 hours to cover 230 miles from Bethel, ME, to Calais, connecting first with I-95 to Bangor, then Route 9 to Calais. And the stretch from U.S. 91 to Bethel is almost -- I say, almost -- as bad. Cheers,

RE: RV wreck in KC today - see newa video

My greatest fear about having to stop along an interstate: People look right, then steer right. Probably why so many states have passed laws that require you to move over to the left -- when you can -- if you see emergency vehicles stopped on the shoulder of the road. The folks this time were lucky. But the trucker will probably get his ticket pulled. Cheers,

RE: Disconnect -- or not?

Maggie, If you need to unplug your stuff at home to protect it from lightning, or because you don't want to pay for the electricity that it would draw while you're away, well... you gotta do what you gotta do. Otherwise, you could just leave it plugged in and when you get home the thing will still be working. The other idea about needing to leave it on for your road equipment to work is not true. Lightning strikes are, indeed, the main concern, although I do believe Other Half has everything hooked up through a surge protector. We'll probably just disconnect the TV and leave the receiver hooked up. Thanks, everyone, for giving me the correct information. We are aware we won't be getting our local Orlando TV stations and we care not a wit. Hopefully, it will be COOL in Maine. Don't need to be reminded it will be 98 degrees and 98 percent humidity here. :W Cheers, Maggie, aka Magster

Disconnect -- or not?

We are new DirecTV sunscribers and so far, are pleased. We switched from cable for the sole purpose of having a satellite dish with us while we travel for three or four months this summer/fall. We will take the non-high def receiver from the living room with us and leave the high def receiver in the family room: DirecTV gave us a dish for our 5er. I had planned to unplug everything when we leave next week. Now I hear we need to keep our satellite receiver plugged in at the house so we can access the satellite while in other states. Is this true? Thanks,

RE: Gun on trailer?

Kodiak5er was nice enough to provide a copy of the McClure-Volkmer Act. Looks like I can transport a gun from Florida -- where it's legal -- straight through to Maine, which has gun laws that are to the left of whoopee: meaning none. But it's about hauling it through New York on the way...jeesh. There, if it sits, unloaded, on the trailer with the ammo tucked away where it is totally inaccesible, we Might, I say, might be OK -- if we don't get caught? One can only hope if we need my measly 22 it had better not be in New York state. Now, I need to check the laws of every state between Florida and Maine we will travel through. Frankly, not sure it's worth the aggravation of worrying about. But on the other hand...:h Oh, and to answer another poster's question about being able to pull the trigger... If someone broke into our trailer in the middle of the night, through two barking dogs and a very large, very strong husband ... Oh, hell yeah. Cheers,

RE: Gun on trailer?

Wow, great responses all. Just for the record, I do know how to handle the 22 and would never start firing wildly without knowing what I'm shooting at. A 22 is a pretty ineffectual weapon, but it makes authoritative noise and I would hope that would be enough. I do not anticipate needing it, but since the world seems to be so crazy these days, it would be added peace of mind to have it in the trailer. Our first line of defense remains a pair of barking dogs. I have no need of a CCW, so it will never go in the truck, although in Florida it's perfectly legal to carry a handgun in a locked glove box or car trunk without a CCW. We are not taking the 5er into Canada on this trip, nor would I be stupid enough to try and take a gun into Canada -- or Mexico -- in the first place. Thanks for all the great information. Cheers,

Gun on trailer?

How many of us are traveling with a gun of some kind on our trailers? I fully realize that every state law is different when it comes to weapons, so what are the ramifications of sticking our pathetic 22 handgun in a dresser drawer. We've never carried it with us in 5 years of three-to-four-months trips each summer, but I read more and more about RVers being armed. Thinking about throwing it on board this year for our trip to Maine.:h Cheers,

RE: Towing with a long bed truck ???

The only downside to a longbed is when you're NOT towing. It takes up a lot of room in parking lots, particularly ones that have narrow aisles. :) Cheers,

RE: Hows this for a TT name.

How about "Porta Party"? Pretty good, actually. In the annals of outrageous puns, that ranks up there. ;) Cheers,

RE: Campgrounds close to WDW

You might want to check out Seasons in the Sun RV Resort in Titusville, due east of WDW. There, you also have access to the Space Center and beaches. It's Passport America, but I'm sure they have weekly rates, too. http://www.SeasonsInTheSunRVResort.com Cheers,

RE: 5th wheel with passenger and drive side entry doors

Cool, but who wants to get out into traffic to get into the fiver? I realize they might have to offer both options because some people drive on the wrong side of the road. However if you live in the US why would you want that??? I can't think of any that you could access while driving ( Mexico, Canada) ?? Maybe if you went through Mexico to others?? Huh? I think you will find that in Mexico, Canada and throughout South America they drive on the right, just like we do. Cheers,

RE: Leveling the front jacks (or should you)

You level the fiver side to side by driving the fiver tires on wood/plastic blocks. The front legs should NOT be used to level side to side, ONLY front to back Think you missed the point here...what happens if the ground is not level and it is not possible to get the legs equally extended. In that case you need something under one leg - or the other... Cheers,

RE: Don't get mad, get even!

We were camped at a bloomin' expensive CC in Virginia Beach. The site next to us was empty, but the second one over was hosting an army. It wasn't the number of people partying that annoyed us, it was the four dogs they had, all of which were allowed to use the vacant site as a potty. Afraid the CC hosts would think it was our two dogs leaving the mess behind I cleaned up after their dogs, hoping they'd get the hint. It never happened. After about two days of this nonsense I said, the heck with it. I dutifully went on poop patrol, then marched over to their campsite and deposited the cleanup. I think they left the next day anyway. Slobs like that never will learn, but it sure made me feel better.:p Cheers,

RE: Carlyle10 ply load D tires

There's a million posts on this subject. So, to be brief: In a 15-inch, 80-pound load range E tire your choices are limited. Carlisles, Denmans (3 of 4 blew on our trailer last summer), Maxxis, Titans and maybe a couple of others. Everybody will tell you to upgrade to a 16-inch wheel. Many of us can't, so we're stuck with what's available. Cheers,

RE: Dehumidifiers?

We bought something called a Bionaire at a hardware store in Maine for something less than $100 bucks after we got tired on water running down our windows and puddling in the sills every time we had the heat running. It is small enough to shove under the table when we are traveling, or behind a chair. It is fully automatic, so you can set it for the amount of humidity you want. It works great and beeps when the water tank needs to be emptied. You have no idea how much humidity two adults and two dogs can put into the confines of a trailer until you have one of these things. (Eh, spare me the jokes about hot air, please).:p Cheers,

RE: Fifth wheel trailers how much should i pay?

Need some info on what the average price should be compared to the msrp. Is it different for canada Have met many Canadians in our last four years of travel -- before the Loonie became equal to our dollar -- who bought their rigs in the States -- everything from massive motorcoaches to fifth wheels. They all said they saved huge amounts of money by buying here. Don't know what the tax implications for you would be, but you might want to sniff around south of the border, son. Cheers,
